Current Status - October 2002In the garage. Had some problems with the starter which I did not manage to resolve before it started to get very cold around here. So it ended up in the garage where it will stay until next summer. While at it, the dismantling devil struck me and it seems this will be a bigger project after all (surprise, surprise!). I did have some problems with the intake manifold leaking both oil and water (nice...) so I decided to lift it to see what could be done. That was easier said than done of course: Eventually years of silicone abuse gave way and off it came and I discovered that some clever guy had put a rectangular port intake manifold on a oval port head... Sigh. So I guess Summit will recieve an order for a Performer RPM Oval Port here pretty soon. I haven't ordered anything yet since I'm still not really done researching the problem that started the whole thing; the starter (no pun intended). When I removed the intake I also found something which, at least to me, looks a bit weird. The camshaft seems to be located too far back in the engine. Now I do not claim to be any expert on Big Blocks, but it just looks so wrong that the lifter should be way off center on the cam lobe. If it was just a little bit more, the lifter would be inside the edge of the lobe and I refuse to believe that can be good. Maybe Summit will have to deliver a suitable Comp Cams camshaft as well... To Be Continued... |
