Some nice news on the bootleg front here lately:

EMS has shut down...but it has been reborn as culturedeluxe.com. Find some great bootlegs there!

Boomselection might be dead, but there's a lot of new stuff over at Base58.

And as an additional bonus Eve Massacre has done a nice mix of Missy E., Bob Dylan and good old Jello Biafra. There's even some Bodycount, Cure and FGTH thrown in for good measure. Find it here.

Haven't been finding any good music online lately, so I've been doing my own. Go here to become a bad 70's DJ. Excellent fun!

Ok, I have nothing personal against Maurice Gibb, he might be a nice character and all, but it is really fair? Joe Strummer gets a heart attack and dies. Maurice Gibb gets a heart attack and doesn't. Well, Bee Gees did after all sing "Stayin' Alive" and Joe Strummer probably decided not to stay but to go in the end. And the world is a bit less nice all of a sudden.

Joe Strummer's site here.

Now this is a find: a 45 minute mix by Freelance Hellraiser. Get it from here. (Beware, 60+ Mb.) Any mix that starts with Whale's Born To Raise Hell has to be good! (I seriously did not think anyone outside of Sweden had heard that one!)

The link was found at Oorsmeer, which I believe is dutch for earwax. The whole site is in dutch, but it's still pretty easy to figure out. Especially if you speak dutch.

At Oorsmeer I also found a link to a nice mix by previously mentioned DJ Z-Trip. Called The Bombshelter DJ's - The Baltic Room, it can be downloaded here at a mere 260 Mb...

Now here's a nice download. Some sort of unofficial Soulwax (2 Many DJ's) mix. Pretty cool. Just get it. [Found @ McSleazy's] (McSleazy has by the way done a pretty nice remix of Madonna's Music. Get it here.)

In case you've missed it; this is really a must download as well. [Courtesy of Boomselection] Now I'm no bigger fan of Eminem (Ok, ok, I think he's the ultimate embodiment of american white trailer trash), but this remix/boot by Jacknife Lee is just brilliant. One of these songs I can actually listen to several times in a row. Not very common. (And the best part is that I'm sure Eminem just hates it!) Go get some parental affection a'la Eminem!

Found a rather cool record shop here: The Evil Clown. Besides having a most brilliant name they also have taste. Look at their recommended list here. A most impressive mixture. If you claim to know all the albums listed there; you are either lying or you need to get a life. (And if somebody happens to have a copy of Casino Versus Japan's album Whole Numbers Play the Basics; I'll buy it. I have no idea what the heck it actually is, but it's the coolest artist/album name combination I've heard in a long time!) Oh, and what exactly is Eddie and the Eggs? The 21st century version of Peter and the Test Tube Babies? Brilliant stuff indeed.

Speaking of record shops I realised that I haven't bought an album in months. Don't really see the need. As said before, there's enough free music available for download to keep most people happy. But included with the latest Q magazine was a CD with "The Best Tracks from The Best Albums 2002" which seems to indicate that I should probably buy The Datsuns and also the latest offering from Feeder. But we'll see.

The Good

DJ Z-Trip and DJ P - Uneasy Listening Volume 1 can be found here. Some pretty cool mixes like Beds are Burning vs Whom The Bell Tolls! Just take it easy with the downloading, one at a time.

For some more mixing madness, DJ Spec has given up on his redmix and instead released yellowmix. More than two hours of funkadelic stuff. Get it here. Get redmix part 4 while you're there, some brilliant mixing of Iggy's Lust for Life.

The Bad

Well...what is one to say...Game Over? I had planned to go to the concert, but ended up at the pub instead. Good thing apparently.

The Ugly

No. No-no. No bloody way. This is just dreadful. For all involved.

Now this is a must for any rock fan: Generous Maria. (And I'm not partial just because they're Swedish!) Some really good Stoner Rock, which in itself of course indicates it's nothing really new, but it sure rocks!

On their homepage you can find a bunch of teaser clips to download. On Vitaminic one can find three full songs, Tears of the Fish being the highlight. And the best thing; you can order the latest album directly (well...sort of) from their website. Don't forget to print out a souvenir for yourself, like their autographs! Funny.

Btw, Vitaminic is well worth a couple of hours of browsing. They have quite a lot of good music freely downloadable. And while you're there, for fun listen to Demon's Mountain; something as wierd as Italian Stoner Rock with a Doom Metal voice. Sort of works...maybe. Unfortunately they suffer from a rather bad production. The only thing with Vitaminic is that they're mightily confusing about what is free, what requires registration and what costs money. IUMA is better from that point.

Since the music industry seems hellbent of pissing everybody off to no end, and I decided to take it personally, I went searching for some nice indie sites. Here a good list to start with:

Century Media Records Rock/Metal, some pretty cool bands.
Some Songs Horrible layout, a lot of...ahum...interesting music, but some pretty good as well.
MP3.com They claim to have over 1.5 million songs available for download. Legally. But you have to register, which can be easier said than done... Also be aware of all the major label stuff on the front page, dig deeper.
IUMA Now this is cool. No silly registration, just step inside and get drowned by thousands of bands. I found SLIT very heavy, Color Blind Soceity rather nice and 10 K Slide having more enthusiasm than skill perhaps... :-)
catastrophe records A bit uneven perhaps (to put it mildly), but there's a huge collection here and quite a number of tracks are well worth listening to.
People Like You Apart from having one of the more offensive names for a record label I've encountered, this label is also releasing some pretty cool music. Any label that release a compilation called "The Mighty Desert-Rock Avengers" is golden in my book! Oh, and for you who thought Psychobilly died with Batmobile, check out Mad Sin. They have a new album out.

Found some nice new bootlegs:

  • Go Home Productions - Morzeppelin ... Very cool mixture of Morcheeba, Led Zeppelin & CCS. Well worth the download. (Oh and while you're there, if you haven't heard "Work It Out With A Foxy Lady", download immediately!)
  • Soundhog - Get This Supernaut Started ... How about some Pink vs Black Sabbath? Cool stuff.
  • ThriftshopXL - Antichrist ... Not really a bootleg, but kind of charming. It's soon Halloween after all!

BBC has a nice overview of the "new rock" that is hitting us from everywhere right now. All the usual "The..." bands are there, and then some. Nothing spectacularily new for the devoted; but a good intro and in usual BBC style loads of content. I think I liked the list of "form your own new rock band" prerequisites best:

  • You will need:
    • To be thin
    • To be male
    • To be white
    • To have dark hair
    • To have a band name starting with "The..."
    • To wear tight T-shirts or leather jackets
    • To know a maximum of three guitar chords

Hmmm, I don't know but it all looks vaguely familiar to me...

2002-10-27

Hehe, this is pretty funny. Some people just have too much time. Don't miss the stagedive! (There's a whole bunch of them actually. Don't miss the vikings either...)

"Nobody has been scumbag rockers like us and lived to tell the tale." - Keith Richards

Pretty funny tale about the early Rolling Stones in this BBC article.

2002-10-09

Not listening to too much new albums lately. Mainly been bootlegs. The new kind that is. Not the good old tape recordings of live concerts, but rather the phenomenon of mixing existing songs together. Preferably the acapella from one song over the instrumental of another. Most of it is very illegal of course. The exceptions being Soul Wax's "2 Many DJs" and the dreadful Junkie XL remix of Elvis.

Some links:

McSleazy's Bootlegs

Some good stuff and more links. Also hosts a message board which is the absolute best way to stay in touch with the scene and hear the latest and greatest.

Soul Wax

Made "2 Many DJs". Enough said.

Bumtschak

Some very nice boots.

Go Home Productions

Also very good.

Boomselection

The original. Slowed down lately, but still has some gems sometimes.

2002-10-08

Found a "nice" article by Steve Albini. (Who you all should know. If not go here.) Sad but true stuff indeed.
